So, I'm more than half way through the Davinci Code, and have some stuff that I think is worth sharing. This post will contain things and discoveries that happened in the book, so if you are opposed to spoilers, do not continue reading. So, Robert and Sophie had just arrived at the bank where Sauniere had led them too. They were desperately thinking about the account code he set and what it might have been. At this point, I was thinking along with them and thinking about any clues Sauniere might have left including numbers. And immediately I thought, THE FIBONACCI SEQUENCE. And I was right about this being the account number. I thought it was cool that I proved to be slightly smarter than them at figuring that out. Later in the book, where I am now, I reached the conclusion before them too. Robert just popped the rose out of the box containing the keystone, and for the first time the reader gets to see the writing on the inside. Robert thinks its another language, but I knew different. When I first picked up the book before reading it, I noticed that there was a handwritten font on the cover crossing the Mona Lisa's face. I looked closer, and after a few seconds realized it was written BACKWARDS. I deciphered the first three words and then gave up, and read further in the book. When I reached this point where we see the writing for the first time, I recognize it immediately. I knew immediately that it was written backwards. I stopped reading and held the page up to the light to confirm my suspicions, and sure enough I could read it. It WAS written backwards. A few minutes later, I got the idea to hold the cover up to the mirror and found that, as I suspected, the writing on the front was the same as the backwards writing in the book. So, yet again, I figured out one of the clues before the characters in the book did. I absolutely love when that happens, when I can figure it out before they do. I've also been dog-earing (folding over) the pages in the book that I have thoughts or suspicions about. I don't really believe in annotating, so I do this instead. And as I continue reading I hope to find more clues that the characters didn't catch earlier in the book.... Yes, I thought this was all worth posting.

Hey Lena,
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're enjoying The DaVinci Code. I thought you might. And yes, I know exactly what you mean about finding out the clue before the character. An awesome feeling, huh? When I reached that part in the book I also held it up the mirror. It was so exciting! (side note: have you seen "National Treasure"? Now THAT'S an awesome movie.) The book reeks of Chasing Vermeer and The Westing Game and those kinds of stories... have you read either of those?
So what were some of the pages you dog eared with thoughts? Some of the theology stuff is pretty mind blowing... I wish I knew enough Catholic theology to know what's true and what's not. Either way, I know the book was very upsetting to certain people.
Anyway, I hope you're still enjoying it. If you watch the movie, tell me what you think. It's totally different from the book, and I'd be interested to know your opinion.
Mindy
p.s. Nice trick at the bottom :-)
Yes, I have read Chasing Vermeer, although not the Westing Games. And I also haven't seen National Treasure, but I want to see it. You did the thing with mirror, too? Did you hold the page up to the light like I did first, or not? I think that part of the book is really interesting.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Thanks! Could you read it?
